$200M Film Hub Proposed for Queenstown: What It Means for New Zealand’s Screen Industry

A major $200 million film hub is in the works for Queenstown, setting the stage for what could become one of the most significant developments in Aotearoa’s screen production sector.

The proposed “Studio Queenstown” would feature a high-tech sound stage and extensive film industry infrastructure, providing a much-needed southern base for large-scale productions. It is being led by Queenstown Commercial, with detailed planning already under way and a land purchase secured near Frankton.

At full capacity, the project is expected to generate over 1,000 local jobs and deliver $180 million annually to the Otago economy. With Queenstown already a drawcard for international filmmakers thanks to its spectacular scenery, the addition of purpose-built studios and production facilities is a logical next step for turning the region into a screen production powerhouse.

This announcement comes at a time when the New Zealand Government has confirmed a significant increase to its screen production rebate scheme, boosting industry confidence nationwide. Finance Minister Nicola Willis recently unveiled a $577 million increase to production incentives, further cementing the country's position as a global filming destination.

Industry leaders have long pointed to the need for better infrastructure in the South Island to support the increasing demand for location-based and studio-based filming. Studio Queenstown could not only attract international productions but also nurture local talent and crew, providing a vital link in the screen sector’s national network of facilities.

At Collaborate, we see opportunities like this as a game-changer for New Zealand-based talent. A thriving film hub in Queenstown would open doors for more screen roles, commercial shoots, and creative collaborations across the South Island. It's an exciting time for actors, content creators, and production teams looking to work closer to home—especially those based outside of Auckland and Wellington.

With environmental planning consent already granted for an earlier version of the project, Queenstown Commercial is optimistic about meeting with local council and government to ensure the development aligns with regional growth goals.

Whether you’re a director seeking locations, a producer looking for crew, or a brand wanting to tell stories through film—this Queenstown hub could become a vital cornerstone in your next project.
