Born with Cerebral Palsy in Tauranga in 1995, Mark's early prognosis painted a bleak picture, predicting that he would never walk or talk. However, his parents, fuelled by boundless love and determination, embarked on an intense therapy program, aimed at training new brain cells to replace the functions lost at birth. This rigorous regimen, spanning six years, not only reshaped Mark's physical abilities but also kindled his intellectual potential.

Though the journey was arduous, Mark's family remained steadfast, facing the strain with unwavering determination. The therapy's success enabled Mark to achieve remarkable milestones, from learning to walk to participating in mainstream classrooms and sports, defying all expectations.

Yet, as Mark entered school, he encountered new challenges in the form of bullying and social isolation. Nonetheless, his indomitable spirit led him to embrace competitive sports, representing New Zealand in athletics and table tennis through Paralympics New Zealand's development squad. 

Embracing his love for sports, Mark found acceptance and camaraderie among like-minded individuals, a sense of belonging he cherished.

Amidst these experiences, Mark's life intersected with what was then the Variety Bash, a group dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged New Zealand children. The support and acceptance he found with this group, now the Great Kiwi Road Trip, left an indelible mark, inspiring him to give back and become a crucial ambassador for the cause. Mark's journey as a speaker began here, sharing his story of overcoming challenges and inspiring resilience with large audiences.

Choosing a Business Management Degree in 2013 opened new doors for Mark, leading to his current position with a major finance company in New Zealand and Australia. Mark's employers value him for his talents, recognizing him as a capable colleague rather than focusing on his disability.

Throughout his life, Mark has remained grateful to the Brain Injured Children Trust for the vital role it played in his journey. The trust provided invaluable support, contributing to school trips, assisting with Paralympics costs, and offering financial aid for university expenses due to his disability. Now, as a leader on the trust's committee, Mark seeks to give back by providing other families with access to the therapies that changed his life, offering them hope and encouragement.
